format file readme

What is a readme file and how do I open a readme file?

Files with the .readme extension are text documents employed to provide users with helpful information and specific details about certain applications installed in the system. Most of these README files consist of data referring to directory paths and installation logs stored by the application in conjunction with the OS during program installation. The installation DVDs and CDs or even the downloadable installation wizard applications of most programs contain these README text documents and are copied unto the installation folder of the program upon successful installation. Files with the .readme extension can be opened or viewed and even edited with a wide variety of text editors. These include popular ones like Microsoft Notepad and Microsoft Wordpad. These .readme files can even be viewed or opened using text editors developed for the Mac platform. Microsoft Word can also be used to view these README files, since the README file extension is similar to the TXT file format.
