format file latex

What is a latex file and how do I open a latex file?

The LATEX file extension is used for a document system of preparation intended for high quality typesetting. It is usually preferred for medium to large scientific or technical documents but also used for publishing of any form. This document system is offered for free to any authors but is advised to read first the LPPL before any work is created and modified. It lets authors using this system to give basic information like article text, title, author’s name, date and title of the document. They don’t have to worry about basic formatting which is what LATEX is all about (write and format later). LATEX include features like using PostScript or Metafont fonts, advanced typesetting of mathematics with AMS-LaTeX, inclusion of artwork, and process or spot color, Multi-lingual typesetting, automatic typesetting of bibliographies and indexes, control over large documents containing cross references, sectioning, tables and figures, typesetting journal articles, technical reports, books, and slide presentations. LATEX was created in 1985 by Leslie Lamport and was based on TeXtypesetting languageof Donald E. Knuth.
