What is a svg file and how do I open a svg file?

The SVG extension is a two-dimensional vector graphic format file created by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). It is a standard format to display vector graphics on the web, and describes images using an XML based text format. The SVG format is an open standard developed under the W3C with Adobe. SVG images can be created and exported from Adobe Creative Suite programs but is not natively supported by Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements or InDesign.
