What is a kmz file and how do I open a kmz file?

KMZ files store map locations viewable in Google Earth, a global mapping program. They provide a bird's eye view of locations throughout the U.S. and other areas of the world. Placemarks may include a custom name and the latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates of the location. KML files are very often distributed in KMZ files, which are zipped KML files with a .kmz extension. Keyhole Markup Language (KML) is an XML notation for expressing geographic annotation and visualization within Internet-based, two-dimensional maps and three-dimensional Earth browsers. KML was developed for use with Google Earth, which was originally named Keyhole Earth Viewer. It was created by Keyhole, Inc, which was acquired by Google in 2004. KMZ files can be opened by unzipping them with a compression utility, such as WinZip on Windows, MacZip for Macintosh users, and Zip and UnZip for UNIX systems.
