format file pem

What is a pem file and how do I open a pem file?

PEM is a Base64-encoded certificate file used to authenticate a secure website. It is typically imported from a Unix-based Apache Web server and compatible with OpenSSL applications. PEM encoded certificates are ASCII they are not human readable. A PEM files is a container format that could include just the public certificate such as with Apache installs, and CA certificate files /etc/ssl/certs, or can also include an entire certificate chain including public key, private key, and root certificates. SSL .pem files are concatenated certificate container files which can be thought of as a stack of layered certificates. They are frequently required for certificate installations when multiple certificates are being imported as one file.
