What is an ashx file and how do I open an ashx file?

The ASHX file extension is used by the Microsoft ASP.NET HTTP handler. When a visitor accesses this type of webpage, the handler references another page that produces a specified code which is sent to the visiting browser. ASHX files are very similar to ASPX files, and are a common way to implement an http handler without pre-compiling the handler code.
