format file ex_

What is an ex_ file and how do I open an ex_ file?

A compressed executable file included in installation disks of programs developed for computers running on Microsoft Windows-based systems is saved in the EX_ format. These EX_ files are encoded and compressed using specifications and standards proprietary to Microsoft. This is done to reduce the size of the EXE files created as installer scripts for the corresponding program, since installation disks contain many program files required to install the Microsoft Windows application. Certain files in an installation disk are implemented with functionalities that can rename the .ex_ extension of these installer files to the .exe extension, then these renamed EXE files are decompressed by other files in the installation disk and the OS before the EXE file is initialized to start the installation process. The Makecab application is classified as file compression software bundled with many Microsoft Windows-based systems, and this program can be used to create an EX_ file. The compression and encoding specifications implemented into an EX_ file is similar to the compression and encoding standards implemented into DL_ files, which are compressed DLL (Dynamic Link Library) modules.
