Pocket Word was developed  by Microsoft as a word processing application for mobile systems integrated into Windows Mobile PC portable devices, and this software uses the PSW extension. These .psw files are text documents that may contain a wide variety of formatting attributes and page layout characteristics similar to those that may be found in Microsoft Word documents. These PSW files may also contain images, tables and other digital presentation objects embedded by the user. This file format was developed from the technologies integrated into Microsoft Word documents, particularly the DOC file format, except the PSW file format was chiefly made for word processing purposes in compatible mobile devices running on Windows Mobile systems. PSW files can be used with Microsoft Word via the "Export" feature integrated into Pocket Word. This means quicker and easier sharing and collaboration between users of both Pocket Word and Microsoft Word. These PSW files can also be opened, viewed and modified using LibreOffice and Microsoft Word 2010 among other word processing applications.
