format file gif

What is a gif file and how do I open a gif file?

GIF, or Graphics Interchange Format, is a bitmap image format. The GIF was introduced by CompuServ in 1987 and has since then come into widespread usage on the internet due to its wide portability and support. GIF files are used for graphics presented on websites, and can support up to 8 bits per pixel for each image, allowing an image to reference its own palette of up to 256 different colors chosen from the 24-bit RGB color space. GIF is best for images of simple shapes, a limited colour palette, text and other elements. GIF files are compressed using loss-less compression, meaning image quality is not sacrificed as file size reduces, and they support transparent backgrounds. GIF files are also able to contain animation.
