A POD, or Plain Old Documentation is a text file used for documenting source code written in the Perl programming language. It uses basic syntax that can be easily parsed and read in source code format. The Perl language is an interpreted and widely-known language among programmers. It is used for practical extraction of data and serves as a reporting language. It also borrows features from other languages such as C language, AWK, shell scripting and others. The language provides a high-level text processing facilities without data length limits and the many contemporary Unix tools. To view and manage POD files, users may use its authoring program itself, PerlPOD documentation can be saved as a file but can also be written within Perl source code. POD files are used to document publicly released Perl modules and for the Perl help manual, also called the Perl manpages.
