What is a pack file and how do I open a pack file?
A PACK file is created by Pack200, a utility included in Java 1.5.0 that compresses JAR files. Pack200 is not a lossless compression. It contains a JAR file that has been compressed by up to sixty percent, and is used by Java Web Start clients to retrieve and unpack JAR files for Java software. PACK files are also compressed into PACK.GZ files. PACK files are also associated with ".jar.pack" extension compound. A Pack200 file compressed with gzip can be hosted on HTTP/1.1 web servers. The main application used to open PACK files is the Oracle Java Web Start application which runs on MAC OS, Windows and Linux machines. This application allows users to launch full-featured applications easily and quickly. Whether the applications users are launching are chat clients, spreadsheet programs, etc. through this software, they can successfully launch these applications without any problem. By packing the jars placed on a site and enabling update to unpack those jars after download, the amount of data downloaded during an update can be greatly reduced.
