format file obj

What is an obj file and how do I open an obj file?

OBJ is a Wavefront 3D Object file containing 3D coordinates, texture maps, and other object information. It is a standard 3D image format that can be exported and opened by several 3D image editing programs. OBJ files contain a standard 3D image format that can be exported and opened by using several 3D image editing programs. Object files may be in ASCII format (.obj) or binary format (.mod) however will not contain color definitions for faces. Due to their format, they are human readable. OBJ files support both polygonal objects and free-form objects. Polygonal geometry uses points, lines, and faces to define objects while free-form geometry uses curves and surfaces. The OBJ file format is a simple data-format that represents 3D geometry alone; the position of each vertex, the UV position of each coordinate vertex, vertex normals, and the faces that make each polygon defined as a list of vertices, and texture vertices. Vertices are stored in counter-clockwise order by default, resulting in specific declaration of face normals unnecessary. OBJ coordinates do not have units, but OBJ files can contain scale information in a human readable comment line. Files in OBJ format can be opened with Autodesk Maya 2013, Blender, and MeshLab in Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, and Linux platforms.
